New Dimensions: Fashion & 3D Printing

Whether you’re looking to take your style to the next level or create the must-have look for next season, 3D printing will make you the talk of the room.

And boy are people talking!

From Nike to Katy Perry and the infamous ice-like dress from Iris Van Herpen’s show during Paris Fashion Week; fashion and technology have collaborated for an undeniably intriguing love affair.

In 2013, Shapeways, a 3D Printing service based in NYC, and the Ace Hotel collaborated with bombshell, Dita Von Teese, for this jaw-dropping gown.

The best part?

It was fully articulated and printed using a 3D printer!

By combining Fibonacci’s sequence, 3D printing, and over 12,000 Swarovski crystals; fashion took a leap into a new dimension.

Fashionistas and designers can’t have all the fun. Techies and environmentalists should pay close attention to this collaboration as well.

This technological innovation lessens the need for paper designs and helps to eliminate some of the waste found in mass production.

Now is the  opportunity to shift the conversation towards inventive partnerships to improve the sustainability and environmental impact of 3D printers.

Shapeways takes the additive manufacturing process to the next level with each of their designs.

And it just keeps getting better…

In 2014, they collaborated with Nervous System Studios to create a fully functioning dress. The improvements made the garment more comfortable to the wearer and easier to construct; without forsaking the design or style.

Are You Ready?

One of my favorite shows, Orange Is The New Black, is returning for Season Two! The show premieres on Netflix tomorrow and the entire season will be available. The comedic drama plays on one of fashion’s most revered quotes, ____ is the new black. It usually makes a statement about what is hot or currently in fashion & OITNB does not disappoint. The novel turned show, written by, Piper Kerman, is so much more than a silly show that may seem to trivialize the female experience in American prisons. The writers are impeccable and allow these women to tell a story that emanates with women everywhere. Prisons exist beyond metal bars and this show exposes a plethora of twisted and unfathomable injustice. It also connects and weaves the stories of these women into ones you and I can also relate. There is power in Orange Is The New Black. Spread the light.

The Renewal

As my college graduation beckons, I’m finally seeing the effects of metamorphosis like my friend the catepillar. For the past four years I’ve been stretching, growing, & transforming in unfathomable ways. The seasons are changing & so is the the world around you. Sometimes we must endure the darkness in order to truly appreciate the light. Take some time today to reflect upon a time in darkness. Then spend some time outdoors & immerse yourself in the light. ✨

For the next two weeks I’m cleansing & feeding my soul through prayer, meditation, exercise, & dietary changes. Join me in taking the steps toward the next dimension. Each day I’ll document my favorite part of that day’s process & share a tip or two!

Stay light 💋
